VOLUNTEER

Job Title: Speaker

Location: WYS

Purpose of the position: to speak to the youth about various topics (business, FAFSA, scholarships, life skills, woodworking, journalism, colleges etc.)

Responsibilities and Duties: to speak to the youth about the topic and answer their questions

Qualifications: must be knowledgeable about their speaking topic, must be able to engage youth

Commitment Expected: will be a one time speaking engagement

Training: WYS staff would remain in the room during the speaking engagement

Job Title: Tutor

Location: WYS

Purpose of the position: to tutor youth in various school subjects

Responsibilities and Duties: homework assistance, group tutoring, individual tutoring

Qualifications: must be knowledgeable about school subjects, must pass background checks, must be able to engage youth

Commitment Expected: at least one school marking period (approximately three months)

Training: WYS staff would remain in the room during the speaking engagement

Job Title: Mentor

Location: WYS & off site

Purpose of the position: Help someone realize their potential. We all have unique talents and gifts. Activating the potential in someone by celebrating their talents empowers them to improve their own life, achieve their goals, and help others.

Responsibilities and Duties:  Mentors meet with youth for activities in the community 2 hours per week/8 hours  per month for 1 year.  Opportunity for mentor to become "Youth Advocate," compensated at $14.50 per hour and work with higher-risk youth.

Qualifications:

• 21 years of age or older (15+ for Junior Mentor 4-H)
• Submit to background Checks: Driving, DCF, Criminal
• Own insured vehicle
• Provide references

Training & Commitments:

• Initial 3 hours training, then ongoing quarterly  basis
• Time commitments: 2 hours per week with youth
• Year round commitment

Helpful background:

• Knowledge of child development and family dynamics
• Understand the principles/concepts of working with families
• Basic knowledge of the applicable law and legal principles
• Basic knowledge/willingness to participate in Restorative Practices
• Experience working with youth

Job Title: Mentor

Location: WYS

Purpose of the position: Prevention program designed to assist youth in acquiring knowledge, building character, and developing life skills in a fun learning environment.

Responsibilities and Duties:  Mentor group of 3-4 youth age 9-13 assisting with homework and building skill area (dance, creative arts, karate) in  coordination with facilitator.

Qualifications:

• 15+ for Junior Mentors

Training & Commitments:

• Initial orientation
• Mentoring 2 hour trainings in group setting as offered
• 2-3 hours per week with youth
• Year round commitment

Helpful background:

• Experience working with youth
• Interest in dance, creative arts or karate
